Computer Skills and Applications

INTRODUCTION

Hello! I'm Ms. Absher and I teach Computer Skills and Applications to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at William Lenoir Middle School. This is my fifth year as a WLMS Wildcat and I am excited to see all of my fellow Wildcat students return to the Den!

ABOUT THIS COURSE

6th Grade

Students in 6th grade will be introduced to keyboarding and digital citizenship through hands-on, interactive lessons that are relevant and engaging. Students will learn the proper techniques to execute touch-typing through a variety of web-based applications. Reading, writing, and mathematics will be reinforced as students learn how to responsibly engage with technology while protecting their personal information.

7th Grade

Students in 7th grade will learn the fundamentals of word processing (Microsoft Word/Google Docs) and multimedia presentations through hands-on activities that allow them to think creatively and solve problems. Students will build practical knowledge and real-world skills while reinforcing reading and writing as they design and create word documents and media-rich presentations with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

8th Grade

Students in 8th grade will be introduced to Microsoft Excel and Publisher through a variety of hands-on activities that will emphasize the practical applications of these programs in everyday life. Students will design spreadsheets to solve real-world business problems and exercise creativity as they utilize basic design principles to create business publications such as business cards and flyers. Reading, writing, and mathematics will be reinforced as students polish their computer skills and prepare for their futures.

ORGANIZATION OF THIS COURSE

This course will be arranged in weekly modules that will be assigned in Google Classroom. Modules will be available for one week and will consist of three main parts: Introduction, lesson, and activities.

For hybrid students, each week will consist of two days of Face-to-Face instruction and three days of remote/online instruction. Modules will be assigned on the day we meet face-to-face. 

​

Communication with students and parents will occur primarily through Google Classroom. Parents will receive an invitation to sign up as a "Guardian" in Google Classroom. Guardians will receive a weekly summary with missing work, upcoming work, and class activities. Click here for additional help with Guardian Summaries.

GRADING/EVALUATION

Pencil

This course will use a point system to assess student work and assign grades. In addition to a point value, students will receive written feedback on their work. Any student receiving an unsatisfactory score may correct or redo their assignment for additional points. 

 

Assignments will be submitted in Google Classroom. Feedback will be provided on Google Classroom and grades will be entered into PowerSchool.

FIRST WEEK OF CLASS

We will spend the first week of class getting to know one another and making sure we can access all of the necessary online tools we will use for this course. We will also use this time to brush up on our Google App skills to help students navigate online learning more efficiently. Students can expect to do the following things during their seated class time this week: 

 

  • Login to desktop computers

  • Login to school Gmail accounts and Google Classroom

  • Complete "Getting to Know You Survey"

  • Navigate School Website and our Computer Skills class website

  • Practice fundamentals of Google Classroom and Google Apps

  • Discuss school and classroom procedures during open Q&A
